If you ever wondered why ADS Environmental Services is in business, this video provides a very compelling reason!

This is a classic example of a storm event exceeding the capacity of the storm/combined sanitary sewer.  Once a sewer system surcharges, or has flow that exceeds its capacity, the system can become highly pressurized.  That pressure seeks to relieve itself any way possible.  Once the pressure in the system equalizes, the cycle can start all over again.

As you watch the video, you can see the flow exiting the manhole via a true geyser.  What you can’t see is the manhole cover being blown off the rim.  That cover has to be at least 8 feet in diameter, if not more.  Being constructed of cast iron, that cover is extremely heavy!

Watch carefully for things you shouldn’t do if this happens to you!

First – don’t hit the manhole!
Second – don’t drive near the giant gaping hole that can swallow a small car!
Third – don’t get out of the truck!
Fourth – when you hear the giant gurgling/rumbling sound that sounds like the gates of hell have opened and are looking to swallow you, get you butt as far away as possible!
